Image description
Otto Könnecke was assigned to Jasta 5 on the Western Front in April 1917. He was credited with 33 victories. His Albatros D.V was green with with red lines and a black and white checkerboard insignia.
On the 5th of December 1917, Lt L.J.Nixon of RFC 3 "A" flight was shot down by Könnecke over Seranvillers and captured with his Sopwith F.1 Camel, serial number B6234.
As far as I can achieve it, all insignia are historically accurate. The second Albatros is in the colours of an unnamed Bavarian pilot of Jasta 5.
Description of how this image was created
I started with the aircraft, modelling the curved surfaces of the wings and fuselage in Jpatch. I then used CSG to add wheels, struts and engine parts to complete the set. Finally I arranged them in a dramatic pose.
The clouds are two flat layers with a turbulent bozo pattern over them (as always). There are a couple of stray clouds that I built as billboards (flat objects that are rotated to face the camera). They were difficult, because I had to work out the transformation to rotate them correctly.
The ground is just a plane with some texturing. That includes the hedges, rivers and the perspective-in-air effect of fading to blue at the horizon.
I've included the source code in the zip file. It's nothing special, so I'm happy to put it in the public domain.
You can currently get JPatch at www.jpatch.com
I used PaintShop Pro (PSP) to make all the markings - this was the first time I've used "decals" in povray (image maps with a transparent background) so I had to figure all that out as well.
This text is typed in Crimson Editor (as if anyone cares), and the povray
scene was edited in the Povray for Windows IDE.

I like the picture a lot however there are one or two things that could perhaps be imporved. One is that in my opinion the bullet trails look too solid and possibly if they were a little more realistic it would a better sense of combat. Also, I suffered this problem in the picture I tried to produce for this comp, the clouds look too flat. Nice picture all the same!
