Image description
You need to be a real master to win in this chess... The power of the figure depends now on the color of a cell it stays on (which is not a square anymore and you can move a figure along it to choose more convenient position...) and its height relative to the the other cells, too. So, a pawn might be as dangerous as qween is... Moreover, a chessboard is irregular!
Description of how this image was created
Figures, cap and pen were modelled in Rhino. Chessboard is CSG. HDRI lightning is used. Photon mapping and focal blur were used to achieve more realistic look of the figures

That is indeed crazy chess! This image is quite realistic, but the only thing that spoils it is the pointed bits on top of the kings(?)

Very crystal-clear rendering, and headache-prone concept :-)

Nice clean image. I wouldn't exactly want to learn that variation of chess. I'd get a headache.

Technically almost flawless; I don't like the plasticky "feel" of the pieces & board; it lets you get away without beveling though. I see only two artifacts: The back of the book has caught some bright stripes, and the cup handle caught some of the cup's pattern (simple cylindrical projection I guess). Good modeling work. Is the book your own work, too? The shape looks excellent. Some people may criticize cropping off the top of the cup, but I think it's good this way. Do you have a clue for us what the text on the cup is?
