The image splits in two horizontally when "black and white" means globally "colored in the dark" and "sober in the light".

The image is split again in three along the depth. The foreground shows fruits and flowers and is slightly out of focus. On the right, hands are delicately holding a rose, and seem to shoot the bunch of flowers.

On the left, a single hand is about to grab some fruits, take the glass, and turn the page of the black-on-white green-covered book.

Among four characters on the left page, two girls are shown on the right, one is black, one is white, and they are standing almost back to back. The hand will give live colors to the black-and-white story. White will become flesh-colored, and black will become brown. Grapes are going to end up in the glass, purples ones will produce red wine, and green ones will produce yellow wine (which is not "white").

We may now focus on the main action, and the story begins from the right. We see an angel and a devil standing in an aggressive back-to-back position. Snakes are face-to-face, but they seem even more aggressive. A contrast within a contrast. The red devil and white angel drag in the wine colors, although we know that white wine is yellow. We also know that red comes from purple.

Then two black-and-white cats are lying on the purple couch. They are still back to back but, at least, they turn and face each other. They are one step closer to the reconciliation, still they need wine (and hands!). At this point, a blast of colors is injected, we go from very simple to very complex, and we can appreciate what black and white may also mean.

Standing at the center of the scene, the girls of the book are face to face and connected by the green energy of its cover. Thanks to the hand which now holds the glass, they share the result of the transition from green to yellow, and purple to red. The "black" girl is brown (but she has black hair), drinks the "light" wine, and is wearing a white dress. The "white" girl is not white at all (though her shoes are!), her hair is yellow, like the light wine, but she drinks the red wine. Since she wears a brown dress, we can conclude that brown comes from red, and then flesh must be coming from yellow.

We now understand that the "light" sequence is white, green, yellow and flesh; while the "dark" one is black, purple, red, and brown. The dark and light can become either "black and white", "purple and green", "red and yellow", or "brown and flesh". It depends.

As we go to the left, we are able to see girls' umbrellas. To know which goes to whom, just match the handles, and the dresses will match too. The umbrellas are used for protection against the rain of the golden luster. The girls do not want to dilute their wine.

Finally, on the very left lies the climax. The girls took advantage of the FRUIT of their connection, and a black-and-flesh picture now shows the ultimate encounter when the front and side views of a face are merged together.

Unfortunately, we go out of focus again, when we reach the background. On the right, a man is dressed in black and white and is lying on a gray chair. He is truly colorless and maybe he needs the powers of the flowers lying behind him in the golden vase.

Wait a minute... when we were looking in the also-out-of-focus foreground, what was the first thing we saw on the right side?

The rose!

The guy is honest, he knows he cannot blend as girls did. The only thing he is thinking about: what if I give the rose to the girls? The girls are black and white, I am so. They are now one, so am I. The cats were exactly at the same position before using the fruits. Since the vase nearby the rose is also black and white, should I use the flowers now?

"I must meet HER to make myself transformed into another colorful self."

Instead of being outside and looking inside, he wanted to be inside and looking outside. He wanted to discover new colors. So he used both his hands to grab the flowers from the golden vase and went under the golden luster. Then the power of the flowers allowed the rose to completely change his mind and his clothing, for he now wears the colors of the wine.

He refused to change his shoes, though. He wanted to feel the same ground. But everything else has been replaced by the spirit of the girl. It means that his mind, not only his head, is now brown and flesh. He cannot be racist because he knows he is both colors, as he was black and white in the first place. After having discovered blue by looking outside, he is about to meditate on a red-and-yellow chair which reminds him the separated-then-unified girl, thanks to the wine colors.

The rose showed that red was the color of blood, which is the same for all people no matter the skin color. The devil could not accept that the angel was not red, but when the angel became the white girl, she was drinking red wine in order to be red, at least inside. Likewise the angel could not accept that the devil was not white, but that is what he chose to wear when he became the black girl, in order to be white, at least outside.

As soon as both opponents accepted to look beyond less-than-skin-deep, they realized that they were the same. As red and as thin as the curtain.

There are only one girl and only one guy in the story. Well, maybe there is only ONE character overall.

A spiritual purple one, the color of which red came from.

Description of how this image was created

On the technical side, I wanted to show the power of shading which answers the question "what happens if one considers every microscopic element of the surface, even though they cannot be seen with the naked eye?". Or "what is the difference between velvet, vinyl, metal, and skin?".

The only way to achieve anything related to shading is by using shaders which are common in most rendering software. Since they are now available for hardware, the rendering of that scene can be performed in real time. One can get this exact look&feel for games, etc, because it is rendered using OpenGL (through ARB programming). So one can experience real-time fine tuning for everything except the adaptive shadow blur, and depth of field. All features included, it needs 5 minutes to render in the worst case.

What people usually use is one shader per material, but what I programmed instead is a single shader for getting every material depicted in the picture. It has 26 parameters, but can simulate almost any possible material. What we see in the image accounts for only a subset.

The main light shadowing is automatic, but there are three point lights to simulate the lighting from the window. I didn't want them to cast shadows, because it would need too many more samples for continuous shadowing. So ambient occlusion is a complete fake. I used shaded rectangles as shadow patches. There is no automatic generation though. I had to create every soft shadow on the floor, and on the walls, one by one for each object.

The glasses are fake too. They are rendered using shading only. No actual reflection nor refraction there.

Overall the dress was the most difficult thing to do. I took me two days of programming only for getting this progressive transparency.

On the concept side, I didn't want to show anything. You must trust me on this, because all I wanted to exploit was the shading. I knew that whatever indoor scene setup would have looked absolutely nice.

Even though I think this section should be hidden during the reviewing process, I must tell the truth about the concept. To actually get to this result on purpose was impossible for me because I don't have much modeling tools. The first step was risky right away: the girl!

When I found her only one week ago, I've felt in love. I wish to give special thanks to Qiao Jin for this particular model published on the Dassault website (http://www.3dvia.com/home.php) only two months ago. Of course she was plain gray then, but I said to myself, OK suppose some kind of a mirror, then "black and white" would do a nice contrast, and that was it. Any environment would do it, and I wasn't looking for anything else, I swear.

What I did afterwards was simply browsing 3D models and 2D textures all over the web. I selected the ones most suitable for the topic (and not for a clear concept I had in mind), and randomly put them ANYWHERE in the scene. The fruit bowl for example had nothing to do with the topic, but I knew it would look pretty good. However, in no way was I expecting to use the bowl itself in the concept. It was just a decoration, like everything else!

Since I don't really have the tools for high-end modeling yet, I must rely mostly on public-domain models which all have problems somewhere (that is why they are free). Thus I never think of a concept that would require very specific geometries.

Like a girl holding up a glass. Unless I could find anything, I cannot currently draw my concept on modeling.

The exact same thing happened regarding the pictures. I didn't make any of these pictures, and they were (again) randomly selected and integrated in the scene without any intention whatsoever. The book, the images of the book, etc., everything came from random Google queries!

At some point, I realized what was happening, some scenario was building up by itself... the image was completed to about 90%. Of course I chose the images (angel-devil, cats, etc), because I considered them surprisingly great for my black&white concept, but I also found that the ORDER (from right to left) seemed to relate something. I said to myself "are they the same duet all the time with a progression?"... And while there was still nothing on the left side, I looked very carefully from the devil-angel to the cats, then to the main scene (the girls), I figured out the pattern (the connection!), and I was looking for some last image of the sequence on the leftmost wall. It was the very first intentional query. This time only I was looking for something very specific to matching up a concept coming from nowhere.

Then I typed "opposites" in the Google box for image search, and I got to the perfect front-side picture (http://hemelsgroen.nl/opposites ) in the first page of Google results. Try the search for yourself to testify, it is the 8th image.

I was about to faint and kept saying "that's impossible!" for minutes... the climax of the story is also the climax of the story's story! What a completely amazing picture for my purpose, the original was even black&white, but I had to change the white to flesh color. Overall that was the only cheating!

Everything else had to be driven directly by God.

I figured the whole thing out after the final rendering only, when I started to write the description above. I didn't know there was only one guy and one girl there, and I didn't have to change one iota of the result, for all models, pictures and colors matched perfectly all the way through.

The umbrellas and the raining luster link was also a pure coincidence, definitely unintentional and unexpected. In French, we use the very common expression "mettre de l'eau dans son vin" (literally "put some water in the wine"), which means "meet someone halfway" or "play the game by giving to the opponent a little bit of what he wants". That must have been the girls' mistake. They overused the umbrellas by protecting their wine all the time.

I know it sounds impossible, but I swear it happened that way. The red-and-yellow chair is another example. I was looking for ANY chair. Then I got to this very special chair with a girl, unexpected once again. I put whatever texture on it (some kind of a flag), and all lines fit perfectly to separate the girl in two, then to the shoulders, then to the wrists. It took me a few clicks, it worked perfect, first shot. But I didn't even know there was a meaning.

The only thing that has been added since the moment I knew the concept myself, is the purple book. We know the story comes from the green book, but what happened in the purple one might be left unsaid.

1.   28-08-2008 A nice image, but some basic models too. I would certainly have modelled the umbrella's myself as I feel that they let the image down.
2.   27-08-2008 I really like this one. Very good composition and you've done a spectacular job of expressing the theme without being overt. Nearly every element expresses the theme. I'm amazed you've done this with your own monster shader. Probably the biggest criticism I have is where the dresses meet the floor. It doesn't seem very realistic. Other than that, the materials are spot on, I think. I do wish the lighting was more realisting, though, and not faked, though I appreciate your reasonings.
3.   27-08-2008 Looks like quite a bit of work went into this. Plenty of contrast references. The dark lady's skin seems a touch unnatural though. Curious... ah... internal design.
4.   18-08-2008 intriguing image, very surrealistic and almost dali-esk. However, the whole context is much too complicated to make sense anymore. The contrast is drowned in details which are not always really relevant to the theme, in such a manner that the image is tottering on the edge of kitch.

6.   17-08-2008 Stunning picture. The textures of the fabric in particular are outstanding. The focal blur draws the eye to the center of the image, placing just the right amount of emphasis on the central figures. The amount of contrast in the image is undeniable--some is obvious, some is subtle, and the whole image works together overall to create an incredible entry. My only quibbles were with a few technical details. The hand statue at the left side of the image appears to be going through the table, rather than sitting on it. The chandelier would be lovely with some caustics and reflection/refraction...as it is, it seems rather flat and lifeless. The umbrellas seem very boxy and unrealistic comapared to the rest of the scene. The clothing on the man on the left is bulky, seeming out of place in a genteel drawing room. And it would be nice if the female figures were not exact duplicates of each, although it sounds like your model options were limited. Overall, my favorite image of the round.
7.   15-08-2008 This is just my opinion, but the unnatural feeling of the persons (particularly the two guys in the back) make the image loose much of its elegance. There is a small problem with the wood (left) which seems to have different colors front and side.
