Image description
Although most people of the Free Cities disdain their bastard island city of Braavos, they are, nonetheless, enthralled by the legendary and wondrous stone Titan that guards the harbor. Less well known, but equally wondrous (and far more skillfully wrought) is the Gynosphinx of Braavos, a statue sculpted by the artisan Xel N'Kar after the fall of ancient Valyria. It was cast in bronze a thousand years later and placed on the far southern reaches of the island, a treasure to be enjoyed on their rare sunny days.
Description of how this image was created
The terrain is a procedural height field function and the water is a simple plane with a layered texture for added "foam." The rocks are simple isosurfaces, the boats are simple mesh models, and the background is an EXR on a huge sphere (for image based lighting).
The gynosphinx statue is built from the wings of a Poser eagle and the body of a Poser lion with Lucy's head (from the Stanford model repository) stuck on. I used Silo to join and smooth out the meshes and create UVs. The staute material is a proceduralized texture that averages a tiling bronze image_map with a procedural pigment, bump, and finish.
A single area light for the sun and some subtle focal blur in the camera completed the setup.
