Image description
Six warships of the Royal Navy have carried the name HMS Sphinx. Our HMS Sphinx was a Cherokee class brig-sloop built in Bombay in 1815. She was a sister ship to HMS Beagle and on her second voyage journeyed to the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Japan. We see her here with Mount Fuji on the horizon and the artists signature in the top right of the image.
Description of how this image was created
The ship is a free mesh model from Sharecg.com with the texturing changed in Bishop3D. The Sea, after many attempts to create a suitable mesh, is an iso-surface. It is a modified version of Tek’s Rough Sea. The Figurehead is a Poser model with the textures changed in Paintshop Pro to make them look less human like. And finally the signature, which Miri advised me on, is positioned using screen.inc. I thought that I would be able to finish this in about a fortnight. It took me almost two months. The sea was a big problem then the figurehead looked too real, living in the uncanny valley. I finally worked out how to make the Poser hair look as if it were carved from something solid and not real hair..
