Image description
A pawn on a unfamiliar battle ground - somewhat like a soldier in an unknown country - loneliness... (In fact not entirely correct - hexagonal chess seem to have been quite popular once, and a variety rules exists for different board sizes. A very interesting page on the subject is http://www.chessvariants.com/hexagonal.dir/hexagonal.html. As on all these boards, an odd number of side squares exist, they all have three bishops. One variant even permits 6 players)
Description of how this image was created
Kpovmodeler was only used for the chess pieces (only the pawn is used in this images). The surface of revolution in version 1.0.0 behaves quite quirky. I'll install 1.1 later, after I install the necessary KDE libs. Of the rest, the algorithm to draw the mesh on the board (as usual, the devil is in the details!) took quite a few neurons. Finally GIMP was only used to add the name.

Comments by members when rating this image
1.   30-12-2008 No need of many elements to achieve something pleasant. I like it as much as your other shot.
2.   19-12-2008 I like this one better than the other image.
3.   18-12-2008 The focal blur is a bit overdone, for my taste
4.   12-12-2008 Very beautiful in its simplicity; there's only one thing missing: Blurry reflections! (use an extremely scaled-down bump normal, and the focal blur oversampling will take care of the rest); the pawn's head lets the picture down a bit; squished as it is, it gives the impression of an aspect ratio problem (camera up/right vs. output resolution); I think the shot would benefit from a 16:9 view (same width, less height)
