Image description
Not much of a story here. The hidden value of Povray is what deters some people who are not into math. When interested in something that does require math Povray is the simplest tool for the purpose. The radius of the sphere is the radius of the moon.
Description of how this image was created
I found the moon and earth night images on a NASA website. The day earth image from a linux world clock program. The earth is two spheres one with the night and the other with the day image map separated by a tiny amount so the images are seen independently.

I am a bit puzzled by the description given with this image, but I may have missed something. There seems to be a problem of distance/scale here. The very flat-on positions of the two bodies make them seem to be on the same 2D plane. I would have liked more a 3D construction of the scene somehow. Whatch out when using different image_maps for day and night sides! The effect is rather artificial, imo. Try playing with radiosity instead (especially for the Moon). For the Earth, try using only the lights for the night side.
